A Sunday with no reservations
The plan is written on the back of an envelope: take the afternoon off.
There is no restaurant booking, no ambitious route and no list of places to photograph. Just a blanket in the car, something for lunch and the companion who has been waiting beside the door since you picked up the keys.
Pack for the day you actually want
A bowl, water and the familiar things your dog uses at home take up most of the bag. Your own contribution is a book and a sandwich wrapped rather badly. It is a modest beginning, which feels exactly right.
You choose somewhere that suits your companion: an easy journey, a little shade, room to settle without a crowd. The best spot turns out to be a few steps away from the view everyone else is photographing.
From here, you can hear the trees. Your dog can keep watch over the bag. Neither of you is missing much.
Let the middle of the day stay empty
After lunch, nothing particular happens. A page turns. A breeze lifts one corner of the blanket. Someone nearby laughs, and your companion briefly considers whether this concerns them.
This is usually the part a schedule would squeeze out: the hour between arriving and doing the next thing. Today, it gets to be the whole point.
You do not have to stay until sunset to make the outing count. When your companion is ready for home, fold the blanket, collect the crumbs and leave the place as you found it.
Something to bring home
Later, the afternoon returns in small pieces: a leaf in the bag, a little dust on a shoe, a photograph you took without arranging anyone.
The envelope is still on the kitchen counter. For once, the plan worked beautifully.
